Mareterra is easiest to understand as a sequence rather than a single landmark. Walk from the landscaped upper level to the small marina and waterfront promenade, and the district reveals how buildings, planted ground and public space were composed together on land created from the sea.
Delivered and inaugurated on 4 December 2024, Mareterra is a six-hectare extension of Monaco’s coastline. The official project describes a largely pedestrianised district with a planted park, a waterfront promenade, a small port, residential buildings, shops and links towards Larvotto. It is also the work of several design voices: Renzo Piano Building Workshop shaped the southern, sea-facing ensemble; Valode & Pistre worked on the landward portion and wider architectural composition; and Michel Desvigne developed the landscape.
That collaboration is the point of this walk. Mareterra is not simply a collection of new apartment buildings. Its most legible idea is the transition between city and sea: constructed ground rises and falls, planting softens the infrastructure, and public routes move between elevated landscape, marina level and open waterfront.
Mareterra includes homes as well as public routes. Keep to signed promenades, squares and landscaped paths, and treat residential entrances, terraces and internal courtyards as private. Access arrangements can change for maintenance or events, so on-site signs take priority.
Begin at the upper square, one of the district’s principal arrival points. Notice how reflecting pools, pale paving and the restored Quatre lances sculpture by Alexander Calder create a civic foreground before the route opens towards the sea.
Follow the landscaped contours rather than looking only at the façades. The hillside is deliberately artificial, yet its Mediterranean trees, shrubs and changing levels are intended to make the new ground feel continuous with Monaco’s natural setting.
At marina level, compare the intimate scale of the small port with Le Renzo above it. RPBW describes the building as a sea-oriented volume whose fragmented form evokes a vessel emerging from a shipyard. Look for off-white ceramic, slender glazing, balcony frames and sunshades rather than one flat façade.
Finish along the waterfront towards the Grimaldi Forum and Larvotto connection. Here the architecture steps back and the public edge becomes the main subject: a broad promenade, long views and a direct relationship with the Mediterranean.
Renzo Piano Building Workshop explains the masterplan through a useful contrast: the northern extension belongs conceptually to the land, while the southern portion belongs to the sea. You can read that distinction on foot. The landward side is shaped by planted slopes, paths and buildings embedded into the new topography; the seaward side becomes lighter, more open and more explicitly maritime around Le Renzo and the port.
The greenery is not decorative infill. Michel Desvigne Paysagiste describes a deep, engineered ground layer designed to support mature planting while accommodating complex architecture and marine infrastructure below. Soil depths, drainage and load distribution were planned together. The result is a landscape that acts as connective urban fabric, carrying pedestrians between plazas, stairs, paths and the shore.
Across the public realm, consistent pale stone helps separate the walking experience from the variety of buildings around it. Desvigne’s studio notes that waterfront promenades, plazas, terraced stairs, streets and pedestrian concourses use a uniform limestone. Watch how the same material changes in bright sun, reflected water and shaded planting: continuity comes from surface and proportion as much as from architectural style.
Le Renzo works differently from the upper square, the marina and the promenade. From a distance, its terraces and masts form a maritime silhouette; closer to the port, the building breaks into layers of ceramic, glazing, steel and shade. RPBW lists the project at up to 18 floors and 60 metres high, yet the most interesting observation is how the volume is visually fragmented rather than presented as one sheer wall.
This route works well as a focused hour before continuing west along the seafront or east towards Larvotto. Do not rush to identify every building. The strongest reading comes from observing relationships: where a path narrows, where planting screens a residential edge, where a square opens a view, and where the shore becomes fully public. That is the architectural experience Mareterra offers most clearly.
