Weather Alerts and Sea Conditions in Monaco

A forecast helps you plan; an official alert tells you when conditions may require precautions. Use the right source for the decision, then check local signs and instructions when you reach the coast.

Use a source that matches your decision

No single screen answers every weather question. A city forecast, a government warning and a marine bulletin serve different purposes.

Everyday city planning

Use a current local forecast to choose clothing, time a walk or decide whether an indoor backup is sensible. The Your Monaco app includes daily weather alongside real-time local information and targeted notifications.

Warnings and instructions

When dangerous conditions are expected, consult notices from the Prince’s Government and follow the latest public instructions. An alert may affect movement, access, events or activities even when your usual weather app looks reassuring.

Sea and port decisions

For boating, waterfront work or exposed coastal plans, use marine information rather than a general city forecast. Monaco Ports brings together dedicated weather services for port users.

Official framework

What Monaco’s alert colours mean

Monaco’s 2022 sovereign ordinance identifies three meteorological risk levels. The authority’s current instructions remain more important than a colour read in isolation.

Yellow

A weather event may create risk for the population. Stay attentive, review your route or activity and keep checking official updates.

Orange

A dangerous weather event calls for safety guidance and may lead to initial protective measures. Adapt plans promptly and follow instructions.

Red

A very dangerous event may justify exceptional measures. Treat official restrictions, closures and emergency directions as decisive.

The framework covers hazards including violent wind and storms, thunderstorms and heavy rain, flooding and wave overtopping, snow or ice, cold spells, heat and heatwaves. The practical response depends on the hazard and the measures announced for that event.

Read beyond the symbol

Turn a forecast into a safer plan

A sun or cloud icon hides the details that matter most in a steep coastal city. Look at the forecast hour by hour and reassess before the most exposed part of your plan.

Timing: note when rain, gusts or thunderstorms are expected, not only whether they appear somewhere in the day.
Wind: exposed promenades, harbour edges and elevated viewpoints can feel very different from sheltered streets.
Rain intensity: brief intense rain can matter more than a modest daily total, particularly on slopes and near low points.
Plan B: choose an indoor option and a simple transport route before conditions deteriorate.

Waterfront and sea

A city forecast is not a swimming or boating clearance

Sea state, swell, wind direction and local exposure can produce difficult conditions even when the city forecast appears pleasant. At a supervised bathing area, read the current flag and follow lifeguards, barriers and closure notices.

Port users should consult dedicated marine information and harbour instructions. The published Monaco Ports guide lists Monaco Radio on VHF channel 23 for continuous weather information; confirm current operating information with the harbour authority before relying on it.

When conditions become dangerous

Leave exposed areas, respect closures and seek shelter as directed. For an immediate emergency in Monaco, call 112. Forecast pages do not replace emergency instructions.
