Free experiences worth adding to your itinerary
Walk through Monaco-Ville
The historic district on the Rock is one of Monaco’s essential free experiences. Wander around the old streets, admire the architecture around Place du Palais and continue towards the Cathedral and Saint-Martin Gardens.
Enjoy the views from the Rock
The elevated position of Monaco-Ville gives you several excellent views over Port Hercule, Fontvieille and the Mediterranean. Early morning and late afternoon are particularly attractive for photography.
Visit the public gardens
Several of Monaco’s green spaces can be enjoyed freely. The Japanese Garden, Saint-Martin Gardens and landscaped areas around Fontvieille offer a quieter contrast to the busier parts of Monte-Carlo.
Walk around Port Hercule
A walk around Monaco’s main harbour gives you changing views of yachts, the Rock and Monte-Carlo. The atmosphere changes significantly between daytime, sunset and evening.
Spend time at Larvotto
Larvotto is Monaco’s best-known public beach area. Walking the promenade and enjoying the Mediterranean setting costs nothing, while restaurants and beach services remain optional.
Look for public art
Monaco has sculptures, installations and architectural details throughout public areas. Keep an eye on squares, gardens, waterfront routes and the areas around cultural venues.
Explore Casino Square
You do not need to enter the Casino de Monte-Carlo to enjoy the square. The architecture, gardens, Hôtel de Paris and surrounding streets make it one of Monaco’s classic free stops.
Use Monaco’s public lifts
The public lifts and escalators are part of the experience of exploring Monaco on foot. They help connect districts at different elevations and can make a walking itinerary much easier.
Practical tip
Monaco is compact but steep. Combine walking with the free public lifts and escalators, and check the current ViewMonaco Events calendar because major events can temporarily change access around the harbour and city centre.
