Romeo and Juliet – Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo
Jean-Christophe Maillot’s Romeo and Juliet returns to Monaco for a four-performance run at the Salle Garnier, marking the ballet’s 30th anniversary in the repertoire of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo.
This landmark production, first created in 1996, reimagines Shakespeare’s tragedy through Maillot’s distinctive choreographic language and the music of Sergei Prokofiev. Rather than simply retelling the familiar conflict between the Capulets and Montagues, the ballet places Friar Laurence at the emotional centre of the story, unfolding the tragedy through his memories and sense of responsibility.
Why This Event Matters
Romeo and Juliet has become one of the signature works of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo and has been performed hundreds of times internationally. The 2026 Monaco performances celebrate three decades since its premiere at the Salle Garnier, making this run particularly significant for audiences interested in dance, theatre and the cultural history of the Principality.

Good to Know
All four performances take place at the Salle Garnier of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo. Because the Sunday performance begins earlier than the evening performances on the preceding dates, ViewMonaco lists the exact daily times here rather than displaying a single calendar time for the whole multi-day run. Ticket availability and prices should be checked through the official Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo booking service.
