Invent a Magic Lantern Show

Discover the art of early projected images in a hands-on workshop at the Institut Audiovisuel de Monaco. Over two mornings, children aged 8 and over will explore how magic lanterns worked and then create their own small projected show, combining drawing, storytelling and the visual language of pre-cinema entertainment.

Why This Workshop Matters

Before cinema became the dominant moving-image medium, magic lanterns were used to project painted and photographic images for education, entertainment and storytelling. This workshop introduces younger participants to that fascinating chapter of visual history through practical creation rather than a conventional lecture.

The Experience

Participants will learn the basic principles of the magic lantern, discover how projected images were assembled into sequences, and develop their own short visual narrative. The format is designed to encourage creativity while giving children an accessible introduction to the origins of cinema and projected storytelling.
