European Heritage Days – Public Art Conservation in Fontvieille with AMAPEI
As part of Monaco’s European Heritage Days, AMAPEI presents a guided introduction to the preventive conservation of sculptures displayed in public space. The visit highlights the practical work carried out by beneficiaries of the association’s green-spaces workshop, who are trained in the techniques and routines used to help preserve artworks across the Principality.
What to expect
The visit begins in the Jardin de Fontvieille in front of Fernando Botero’s sculpture Woman Smoking a Cigarette. From this starting point, participants are introduced to the methods used to monitor, clean and care for outdoor works of art, with particular attention to the challenges created by weather, urban exposure and regular public contact.
The programme also offers a social perspective on heritage care: AMAPEI develops activities that support autonomy, inclusion and professional participation for people with intellectual disabilities, and the conservation work presented during this visit forms part of that wider mission.
Practical information
The visit takes place on Saturday 3 October 2026 at 10:00 and lasts approximately two hours. The meeting point is in front of Botero’s Woman Smoking a Cigarette in the Jardin de Fontvieille.
