A Wedding in the Spotlight
A Wedding in the Spotlight examines how the 1956 marriage of Prince Rainier III and Grace Kelly became one of the defining international media events of its era. Presented by the Institut Audiovisuel de Monaco, the exhibition looks beyond the ceremony itself to explore the press, film, television and photographic machinery that carried images of Monaco to audiences around the world.
How the wedding became a global media event
Through films, photographs, archival documents and period equipment, the exhibition reconstructs the extraordinary media operation surrounding the celebrations. It also revisits the production of Le Mariage de Monaco and the role played by cinema, radio and television in shaping the international image of the Principality.
Why the exhibition matters
The exhibition places the royal wedding within a broader history of modern communications. The event was not only a major moment in Monaco’s social history; it also demonstrated the growing power of mass media to turn a national celebration into a global cultural phenomenon.
Seen through the archives of the Institut Audiovisuel de Monaco, the wedding becomes a case study in how images, technology and journalism helped define Monaco’s international profile during the mid-20th century.
